This fall nearly 50 home owners of this racially and economically mixed urban enclave will install rooftop solar installations, according to the Mt. Pleasant Solar Cooperative, a neighborhood group that organized the effort.

The Coop and the Bancroft Elementary School PTA are co-sponsoring a Eco-Living Fair on Saturday September 19 to celebrate their victory in the war on global warming.

The new solar installations will cut the carbon energy consumption of the participating homes by 25-40 percent and spare the earth's atmosphere 25 tons of carbon emissions per year for every 1Kilowatt hour of solar power generated, according to Coop CEO Anya Schoolman.

"What's happening at the national level is important but we're not waiting for politicians and lobbyists to save the planet," Schoolman says. "One way or another, the fight against global warming is going to happen one neighborhood at a time. So we say, 'Let's get going.'"

After the installations are complete, approximately 4 percent the roughly 1200 homes of the neighborhood's single family dwellings will be powered by the sun.

MPNA's Sam Broeksmit and his wife Susan's home will be featured on the tour.

MPNA Supports Pupuseria San Miguel's Substantial Change Request

MPNA sent a letter to ABRA in support of a substantial change for the Pupuseria.  The establishment has increased their capacity 650 square feet, and their seating to an additional 55 seats.

"Although the owner had not applied for substantial change prior to making the expansion, MPNA nonetheless supports their expansion and wishes them well in serving the residents of Mt Pleasant, " said Marika Torok, MPNA Vice President.
