MPNA Signs Cooperative Agreement with Marleny's -- ANC Now Holds New License Hostage

Marleny’s Restaurant, located at 3201 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW, has applied for an ABC Class DR (beer and wine) license for its restaurant of which MPNA supports.   The hours of operation are Sunday through Saturday, 6:00 am until midnight. The hours of sale, service or consumption of alcohol will be from 10:00 am to midnight. This is a family restaurant serving Salvadorian, Mexican and American food with background recorded music only. There will be no live entertainment, cover charge or dancing.

MPNA acquiring feedback from neighbors, members, and non-members who had only one concern. That is, the establishment wanted to begin selling alcohol at 8:00 am.  When MPNA approached Marleny’s owners with this concern, the owners agreed to change their hours.  MPNA, without protesting their license, signed a cooperative agreement with Marleny’s last week.

Unfortunately, the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC1D) filed a protest against Marleny’s stating that having an alcohol license will have an adverse effect on peace, order, and quiet.  This is the same ANC who believes that live entertainment, dancing and charging cover charge will not cause peace, order and quiet problems.

Marleny’s is paying for a lawyer to assist her.  The ANC is interfering with Marleny’s bottom line which seriously hinders her economic vitality proving once again, a hostile environment on our commercial street.
